Imagine feeling a sudden, overwhelming surge of intense fear out of nowhere. The first time it happened to me, my heart started racing, my chest tightened, and breathing suddenly felt like hard work. Within seconds, a massive wave of dread took over, and I genuinely believed I was losing control or having a medical emergency.
That was actually my first experience with a panic attack!
What I didn't realize back then was that my body had kicked into a full "fight-or-flight" survival mode, even though there was no real danger around me. My heart was pumping furiously, and my short, quick breaths were lowering my carbon dioxide levels, which is why my hands started tingling and my head felt so light. Physically and emotionally, it felt terrifyingly real, I felt like i was going to pass out any moment..
While the peak of the attack lasted less than ten minutes before slowly fading, the experience left a lasting impression on me. For a while, I found myself constantly worrying about when the next one might strike.
If you ever find yourself in the middle of a panic attack, here is what helped me get through it:
♡ Look around and name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, and 3 you can hear.
♡ Inhale slowly for 4 seconds, hold for 4, and exhale for 4 to help quiet your nervous system.
♡ Remind yourself, "This feeling is uncomfortable, but it is temporary, and I am safe."
